The number of beer connoisseurs is escalating at an exponential rate and the popularity of establishments serving quality beers is growing. I hear that San Diego has 61 micro breweries with 30 more coming on line. Where as you might not visit them all, some of the local fun spots feature their beers.

Tony’s Sports Bar in the Harbor boasts 20o beers and has a group of 12 rotating drafts on tap. They have a beer tasting at 8 a.m. the first Saturday of every month which allows you to expand your knowledge of new brews. They usually have beers from breweries you have not tried on tap and its easy to find new favorites.

Stone Brewery on Tremont Street Downtown has no sign. They have a great city parking lot adjacent and wonderful garden with spot seating for enjoying your pour with a few friends. I see moms with strollers having an afternoon brew with their kids in tow.  They have at least 20 beers on tap and they have a stand up bar where you can try 4, 8, and 16 oz pours while you perhaps have your growler refilled.

Breakwater Brewing Company at 110 S Coast Highway at Mission is a brewer that also serves the beer of other breweries.  They have at least 20 beers on tap and offer a sampler tray if you are new to their bar.  They also have a full array of pizzas, salads ,appetizers, and sandwiches for the whole family and because it is also a sports bar, TVs visible from anywhere.

Davina’s Cabo Grille on Tremont St downtown has an open air second floor bar and dining area that sports ocean views. They serve a wide selection of local micro brewery beers as well as ice cold selections of bottled and canned beers. They serve some wild cocktail concoctions like their marguerita with a bottle of Corona upended into it.

You could walk to all four and not cover more than two miles if you wanted to really sample the ambiances and beers on the same day.

There is so much to do in Oceanside Harbor including visiting the multitude of restaurants and bars.  You can combine outdoor beach activities with dining and if you have the stamina, make a day feel like a whole vacation. Of course, you could also take a week to do it all.

In the morning, you might like to start with coffee at Nautical Bean Coffee Company in a little kiosk viewing the Harbor in the Cape Cod Village. Or you might like a full breakfast at Beach Break at the Harbor in the Village with outdoor patio dining.

Now for the first leg you could stay in the Harbor or head for the Ocean across the street. You could go surfing by parking in the Harbor lot and walking your board across as so many surfers do.  You will also see them unloading paddle boards and kayaks. You could rent everything including a wet suit at UP Sports a few blocks away on Coast Highway. You could also rent a beginner surf board at Kennedy Surf in the Village. You could get a surf or paddle board lesson from Marks Surf Instruction, licensed by the City.

Or you could opt for a little SUP (stand up paddle boarding) or kayaking from Boats4Rent right in the middle of the village. You can take an hour tour to get to the other side of the Harbor and back looking at all the  boats and restaurants and all the other people looking at you.

You might have worked up an appetite and decide you deserved a beer and some lunch. Rockn Baja with outdoor patio dining and Mexican or sea food with free chips and salsa might fit the bill. Or next door is Dominic and D’Vino with great pizzas and Italian cuisine that can be consumed on the outdoor patio watching people go by like you were in Paris.

The afternoon might be a time for some fishing, jet skiing, sailing, electric boating, pedal boating, more surfing, or maybe a bike ride.  You can rent a boat to fish or fish on the jetties.  The boat rental could set you up with a number of craft for sailing or jet skiing. There is a 9 mile bike path without cars just two blocks away at the bridge.

Now its 3 p.m. and the Happy Hours of started without you, so you better catch up. Every restaurant with a bar has one including Tony’s Sports Bar, Lighthouse Oyster Bar and Grill, Joe’s Crab Shack, Monterey Bay Canners, and the Jolly Roger.

You’ve got a little buzz going and its time for dinner. You have had a few delicious half price appetizers with cocktails, but your stomach is growling. You could stay where you are or decide which ambiance would work for dinner. All the restaurants  seem to cover the spectrum with steaks, sea food, salads, Mexican food, beer, wine, and cocktails.  Of course, they have desserts or you could visit Nana and Pops in the Village for the old fashion ice cream cones and sundaes.

In case your not tired yet, Rockn Baja has a late night Happy Hour during the week from 9 p.m. to closing and Tony’s and Jolly Roger have karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights.  You might have squeezed in a glance at the beautiful sunset or walked out to the beach to see the sun drop over the horizon as it melted into the ocean.

Hey, tomorrow you can start all over again.

Oceanside is a mecca of outdoor activities and many of them are in the water. The ocean allows a lot of opportunities to explore and there are lessons for most of these sports. Learn now and make Oceanside a frequent visiting destination.

Surfing is the top local sport and one reason is that there are fun and usually available waves.  The Pier attracts the biggest crowd and beginners learn near the Pier because there is always a good foam wave.

Beginners can begin in foam and then there is usually an intermediate wave called the inside wave for advancing before they have to go outside for the bigger waves . Lessons  (10% off with Bonus Card)

Paddle Boarding is very popular and great for beginners because you can begin in the Harbor where it is smooth and after practice proceed to the ocean on a calm day. Riding small waves is easy on a paddle board because their volume allows them to be caught early and the big board volume makes them steady. Lessons  (10% off with Bonus Card)     Rentals  Rentals you have to transport

Kayaking is popular because once again you can begin in the Harbor in smooth water and then take it outside to the ocean.  There is an outrigger club if beginners want to get ambitious. Lessons   Rentals Rentals You have to transport

Scuba Diving is fun for sight seeing or fishing.  There are two local schools that help people get their license and OEX arranges trips to La Jolla or other destinations. Equipment, Rentals, Lessons, Trips  (Discount with Bonus Card)

Fishing is a favorite past time and there are many opportunities. If you have a license you can fish off the beach or the jetties or the boats. If you don’t have a license you can fish on the Pier.  Ocean Sports Fishing Boat

Renting your own water craft is simple and you can obtain jet skis, power boats, electric boats, sail boats, and paddle boats in the Harbor. Rentals

You can also rent almost everything that goes into the water like surfboards, paddle boards, kayaks, boogie boards, skim boards, wet suits, and diving gear. Rentals of boards   Rent Surfboards  Wetsuits and Boogie Boards

You can also arrange for charters to do some sailing or longer range fishing.See this site menu

When it comes to the water, Oceanside has it all.  See the Menu for more details

Going to the Harbor is like going on a little vacation, even if you live in Oceanside. I am always impressed by looking at so many great boats and of course play the game that I would like to have that one and that one. I like to hear the seals barking out from the water or while sitting on the docks.

Sometimes I will walk or as part of a bike ride visit Nautical Bean Company and sit outside to gaze at the Harbor with a coffee. They also have pastries and I try with all my might to avoid the incredible brownies.

On game days, I can pick which restaurant I want to visit for TV and drinks plus perhaps appetizers or my meal. Tony’s and Rockn Baja are true sports bars but even Lighthouse Oyster Bar, D’Vino, and Monterey Bay Canners have TVs for viewing your favorite games.

Happy Hours begin normally at 3 p.m. and there are usually  some special appetizers.  Even visiting the Harbor for a drink before you do something else for dinner is a real pleasant interlude.  I see a lot of people sitting for a drink while waiting for their take out.

On the week ends there is a big dinner crowd of people sitting outside on the patios heated by gas burners really enjoying the great food and popularity of Harbor dining.

If you like breakfast before or after your morning bike rides, paddle boarding, boating, or walking Beach Break at the Harbor has great food and outdoor dining. I love the French Toast with bananas but there is so much I prefer to split it with someone.

Of course you can shop for clothes, ocean trinkets, shells, jewelry, and gifts. There is candy in bins and great ice cream if you want to rationalize that you are walking to the Harbor to see what looks good at Nana and Pops sweet store.

Try it for a great break in stress filled weeks.

Saturday and Sundays are fun days to visit the Harbor and have a few drinks and good food while your favorite teams are playing.  You’re getting out of the house or vacation spot to smell the breezes and see the water.

A wide variety of people are out on the Weekends and the Harbor is the destination for a lot of recreational athletes, beach goers, boaters, locals, and of course tourists.

Most restaurants know the value of nice plasma TVs for their guests and most play popular music instead of game announcing which even the sports fans prefer. Who needs to hear a barrage of commercials on the week ends when you can listen to Tom Petty.

If you have a particular food in mind, then you can pick the restaurant and get your cuisine.  You can probably get into conversations with your bar side neighbors because sports fans are soon identifying which teams they favor.

In any case, its more fun than your living room, so get out and live a little.

I find I get into the same patterns living at the beach in Oceanside even though they are activities I enjoy. I often feel I am getting closed off from the world that is happening in bigger Metropolis’s like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.

If I want to see theater, concerts and even sporting events, there are some real costs. Nose bleed seats are reasonable, but good seats are expensive. In this economy, I think a lot of people have cut back.

I recently discovered a venue that acquires tickets that the entertainment palaces make available just to be sure they have a full house. The tickets are available at  50% off and you can choose where you want to sit.

Now I feel I can see plays like “Rent” or comedy, or sporting events as though I lived in New York and save a lot of money to make them affordable.

Signing up is Free and you don’t have to buy anything if you don’t want, but they keep you apprised on what is happening in your city and what is coming up. Somehow I feel a lot more cosmopolitan now.

There is nothing like waking up at the beach. If you are close enough, you can hear the ocean, but there is also the fresh ocean air and maybe the morning breeze.  Most people want to walk  and take a look out to the horizon and see what is happening.

Man feels better by the water. We are mostly water, live in it for our first 9 months and love to get in it to soothe our souls. Tourists and locals can be seen at the water’s edge walking, running, biking, and taking Fido out for a stroll. Oceanside is very dog friendly and most of the dogs are.

There is that first cup of coffee that can be enjoyed at a kiosk near the Pier or many venture to the Pier View Coffee Co for really good coffee and/or pastries and stroll along the strand, coffee in hand.  Petite Madeline’s on Coast Highway and Pier View is also great for coffee and home made pastries.

So many great places for Breakfast. Beach Break at the Harbor specializes in tasty dishes with patio dining viewing the Harbor. Walk to the Harbor, have breakfast, walk out on the Jetty to watch the boats and surfers, walk home and you might have covered 4 miles.

In town there is Breakfast Club Diner on Coast Highway and Pier View. There is the Long Boarder with outside patio dining in downtown on Tremont and Mission.

Now that you have eaten, the world is your playground.  Take surfing or paddle board lessons or rent the equipment and do it on your own. Rent a motor boat, jet ski, sail boat, paddle board, kayak, electric boat, paddle boat and tour the Harbor or ocean at Boats4Rent.

How about golf at one of three great courses and 30% off with the Bonus Card at Arrowood Golf Course; a Ted Robinson 6,700 yard professional course. Feeling adventurous? How about tandem skydiving at Tsunami Sky Diving or Paint Balling at Pendleton with the Paint Ball Park. You can take fitness classes on the beach.

Well its almost 3 o’clock and the Happy Hours are near. Rock’n Baja in the Harbor and other Sports Bars and Restaurants are offering great drink prices and often reduced appetizers.  Venetos on Coast Highway has Happy Hour and half priced Italian Delicacies. Happy Hours starts at noon til 7 p.m. at Monterey Bay Canners in the Harbor.  Tremont Street Sports Bar and Grill is a fun tourist and local bar for drinks and dining.

Why not visit a micro brewery like Stone Company on Tremont St. downtown or Breakwater Brewery on Coast Highway. Some of the best beers you have ever tasted are created in the booming micro breweries in Oceanside.

Watch beautiful sunsets before dinner on the strand or Pier.

Dinner is wide open. Sushi at Harneys downtown, Pizza at Dominic and D’Vino in the Harbor, Mexican at Cabo Grille roof top dining or Anita’s on Coast Highway (20% off with the Bonus Card).

Karoke at many establishments and even late night happy hours at several. Dancing on the weekends at Cabo Grille.

You tired yet? Time for a good nights sleep so you can start over tomorrow.

There is so much to do in Oceanside and food is a great part of the picture.  The Harbor is naturally surrounded by water and part of it is the ocean and part of it is nice and calm.

A short walk from the Harbor takes you to the beach where the surfing is fantastic, but so is the boogie boarding and skim boarding. How fun to venture into the ocean for a few hours, take a shower, and change into casual clothes and walk to the beach friendly restaurants for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The Harbor is also host to every ocean activity including paddle boarding, kayaking, peddle boats, sail boats, motor boats, jet skis, and fishing. What you don’t own, you can rent at Boats4Rent.

If your activities are in the morning you might want breakfast at Beach Break at the Harbor or early lunch at Rockn Baja.  Have a beer, its 5 o’clock somewhere in the world.

If your activities are in the afternoon you’re just in time for the 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Happy Hours with reduced appetizer prices at most restaurants.  Plan your fun around your dining and make it a total experience at the Harbor.
